Might as Well Dance by Judson Laipply

Might as Well DanceLife is not perfect and, more importantly, no one’s life is perfect. I know that. You know that. Life isn’t always going to be the party you want. Even when you have a party, it doesn’t always go exactly as planned. That’s life.

That doesn’t, however, mean you cannot enjoy life to its fullest. If life were perfect all the time, how would you know? You cannot enjoy the warmth of the sun without knowing the cold of the night. You cannot enjoy the laughter of friends and family without knowing the tears of sorrow or the silence of being alone. When life isn’t the party you had hoped for, don’t wallow in it. Accept it and then do something to change it. You have to be cold for only a moment to appreciate warmth.

There’s no shortage of despair in the world. Turn on the TV, read the newspaper, or surf the web and you’ll find misery in every facet of life. Not surprisingly, many people spend a large part of their time focusing on the negative and failing to enjoy the world around them. It takes work to be happy. We all pay lip service to being happy, yet most people do nothing to make happiness happen. They just think they should be able to show up and happiness will take care of itself. Sorry, but it just isn’t that way. We shower on a daily basis (most of us, anyway) to maintain our personal hygiene. Why can’t we have the same commitment to maintaining our happiness hygiene? Shower yourself daily with something to help you find a better way to live.

Please don’t confuse me with your stereotypical over-the-top motivational speaker who will tell you that your misery is created and perpetrated by you and only you, and that everything you want in life is within your reach if you will only step up and take it. In fact, I’ll go so far as to say that you’ll never get everything you want in life, and if you do, you probably won’t be fully satisfied with it when it is all said and done. If you are not happy with what you have, you’ll never be happy with what you get. I can tell you this much. Life will never be perfect, but it can be enjoyable no matter what.

So, no matter what is going on in your life, make a conscious choice to be happy. Life isn’t always going to be the party we’d hoped for, but while we are here, we might as well dance.

What actions will you take to shower yourself daily with things to help you find a better way to live? Leave a comment and let me know!

  1. I’m thankful your words showed up in my lfe today. I was hurting because “the party” didn’t turn out the way I thought it would and suddenly all of the “parties” that didn’t turn out came crashing in. I love to dance…so might as well while I’m waiting for the warmth of the sun:) Thanks!
